Overview

The SBI Card Miles ELITE is SBI Card's premium travel rewards card, and it sits at the top of the three-card Miles family. It's issued, earns SBI Travel Credits on every purchase, and those credits can be transferred to 25 transfer partners through Magnify's transfer platform.

That transfer flexibility is what makes this card interesting. You're not locked into a single airline the way co-branded cards like the SBI KrisFlyer card lock you into Singapore Airlines. Instead, you accumulate Travel Credits and then decide where to send them based on where you're actually flying.

The card comes with a Rs. 4,999 annual fee (plus GST), a 1.99% forex markup that's among the lowest in India, Priority Pass for international lounges, and a solid set of travel insurance covers. It's not a lifetime free card, but it can be made free if you spend Rs. 15 lakhs in a membership year.

Welcome Benefit5,000 Travel Credits on Rs. 1 lakh spend within 60 days of issuance (credited on payment of joining fee)
Interest-free Period20 to 50 days
Interest RateUp to 3.75% per month (45% p.a.)

Let's talk about the fee math. You pay Rs. 4,999 plus GST (roughly Rs. 5,899 all-in) and get 5,000 Travel Credits back as a welcome benefit, provided you spend Rs. 1 lakh within 60 days. Since Travel Credits transfer to airline miles at 1:1, those 5,000 credits essentially pay back the joining fee if you value miles at Re. 1 each. That's a reasonable valuation for programs like Air India Maharaja Club or Vistara Club.

From year two, you'll need to hit Rs. 15 lakhs in annual spend to get the fee reversed. That's Rs. 1.25 lakhs per month, which is achievable if this is your primary spending card. If you don't hit that threshold, the Rs. 12 lakh milestone gives you 20,000 bonus Travel Credits, which more than covers the fee in value.

Earning Structure

CategoryEarn RateEffective Rate
Travel6 Travel Credits per Rs. 2003%
All Other Spends2 Travel Credits per Rs. 2001%

The earning structure is straightforward. Travel purchases earn 6 Travel Credits for every Rs. 200 spent (effectively 3%), while everything else earns 2 Travel Credits per Rs. 200 (1%). There's no monthly or annual cap mentioned on earning, which is a nice touch.

The 3% travel earn rate is solid for a card in this price bracket. If you're booking flights, hotels, or travel packages on the card, you're getting meaningful credit accumulation. The 1% base rate on non-travel spend is average, but remember these credits transfer to airline miles at 1:1, which can be worth significantly more than 1% when redeemed for premium cabin flights.

Earning Exclusions

Not everything earns Travel Credits. Here's what's excluded:

CategoryMCC CodesEarns CreditsCounts for MilestonesCounts for Fee Waiver
Fuel5541, 5542, 5983
Wallet Loads6540, 6541
Rent Payments6513
Utility Bills4900
Insurance5960, 6300, 6381, 6399
Cash Advance

Fees & Charges

The important distinction here is that fuel, wallet loads, rent, utilities, and insurance don't earn Travel Credits but they do count toward your milestone and fee waiver thresholds. So if you pay rent via the card (Rs. 199 processing fee per transaction, mind you), it won't earn credits but it will push you closer to the Rs. 12 lakh milestone and the Rs. 15 lakh fee waiver. Cash advances, EMI transactions, and card fees don't count toward anything.

Milestone Benefits

Rs. 1 lakh (each)1 additional domestic lounge visit (up to 15/year)Anniversary year
Rs. 12 lakhs20,000 Bonus Travel CreditsAnniversary year
Rs. 15 lakhsAnnual fee reversalMembership year

The milestone structure rewards higher spenders generously. At Rs. 12 lakhs, you get 20,000 bonus Travel Credits, which translates to 20,000 airline miles through transfer partners. That's on top of the regular earning from those purchases. The additional lounge visits at every Rs. 1 lakh threshold are a thoughtful touch for frequent travelers who burn through their complimentary quota quickly.

That is 25 transfer partners in total: 10 airlines and 3 hotels at 1:1, 8 airlines and 3 hotels at 2:1, and 1 hotel at 6:1. The 1:1 airline partners are where the best value lives. Aeroplan gives you access to the entire Star Alliance network with excellent award chart sweet spots. Flying Blue is great for Europe via Air France and KLM, especially during their regular promo awards. Asia Miles and Qantas open up Oneworld redemptions. Avios (British Airways) is useful for short-haul flights where distance-based pricing works in your favor.

On the hotel side, IHG Rewards and Wyndham Rewards at 1:1 offer decent value for domestic hotel stays in India.

The 2:1 partners are less compelling since you lose half your credits in the transfer, but Emirates Skywards can still deliver good value for premium cabin redemptions on Emirates routes from India.

All three SBI Miles cards (MILES, MILES PRIME, and Miles ELITE) share the same 25 transfer partners and ratios. The difference is in how fast you earn credits, not where you can send them.

DID YOU KNOW?

You can earn airline miles without a credit card. Mag Miles by Magnify lets you earn miles to Air India Maharaja Club, AirAsia Rewards, and more, just by shopping for gift cards, using the Chrome extension, or booking through the app. No annual fee, no minimum spend.

Redemption Options

Beyond airline transfers, SBI Travel Credits can be redeemed through two other channels, though the value drops significantly:

Redemption ChannelValue per Travel Credit
Air Miles / Hotel Points TransferRe. 1
Travel BookingsRs. 0.50
Shop & Smile CatalogueRs. 0.25

The hierarchy is clear. Transferring to airline miles gives you Re. 1 per credit (and potentially much more if you redeem miles for premium cabin flights). Travel bookings halve the value to 50 paise per credit. The Shop & Smile catalogue is the worst option at just 25 paise per credit. Unless you have a specific reason, always transfer to airline programs.

Lounge Access

TypeVisitsQuarterly CapProvider
Domestic8 per year2 per quarter domestic lounge program
International6 per year2 per quarterPriority Pass (1,000+ lounges)

The lounge package is generous for a Rs. 4,999 card. You get 8 domestic visits and 6 international visits per year. The quarterly cap of 2 visits ensures they're spread throughout the year rather than exhausted in one trip.

The Priority Pass membership (valued at $99) is complimentary for the first 2 years only, which is worth noting. After your complimentary international visits are used up, additional visits cost $27 plus taxes each. Only primary cardholders are eligible for Priority Pass, not add-on card holders.

You can also earn additional domestic lounge visits through spending milestones: 1 extra visit for every Rs. 1 lakh spent, capped at 15 additional visits per membership year. So a heavy spender could potentially get up to 23 domestic lounge visits in a year.

Insurance

Cover TypeAmountDetails

Check-in Baggage LossRs. 72,000
Travel Documents LossRs. 12,500
Check-in Baggage DelayRs. 7,500
Baggage DamageRs. 5,000
Flight CancellationRs. 3,500 per incidentUp to 6 cancellations per year
Lost Card LiabilityRs. 1 lakh

The insurance suite covers the basics you'd expect from a travel card. The Rs. 1 crore air accident cover is standard for this tier. The baggage and travel document covers, while not enormous, provide a safety net for common travel mishaps. The flight cancellation cover at Rs. 3,500 per incident (up to 6 per year) is modest but better than nothing.

Fuel Surcharge & Surcharges

CategoryFeeThreshold / ConditionCap
Fuel Surcharge Waiver1% waiverTransactions Rs. 500 to Rs. 4,000 at petrol pumpsRs. 250 per statement cycle
Utility Payments1% feeTotal exceeds Rs. 50,000 per billing cycle (MCC 4900)

Wallet Loads1% feePer transaction exceeding Rs. 1,000 (MCC 6540, 6541)
Rent PaymentsRs. 199 flat feePer transaction (MCC 6513)

The 1% fuel surcharge waiver saves you a small amount on petrol, capped at Rs. 250 per statement cycle. More importantly, watch out for the surcharges on utility payments, wallet loads, and education payments through third-party apps. These are SBI Card-wide charges that apply across their portfolio, not specific to the Miles ELITE. If you pay large utility bills or load wallets frequently, factor these costs into your calculations.

Forex

The 1.99% foreign currency markup is one of the card's standout features. Most SBI cards charge 3.5%, and even the SBI Card Miles (the tier below) charges 3.0%. At 1.99%, the Miles ELITE has one of the lowest forex markups among Indian credit cards. For frequent international travelers or online shoppers who buy from foreign websites, this alone can justify the card. On a Rs. 1 lakh international purchase, you'd save Rs. 1,510 compared to a standard 3.5% card.

Eligibility & Support

SBI Card doesn't publicly disclose minimum income requirements for the Miles ELITE. You'll need to be an Indian resident between 18 and 65 years old. Standard documentation includes PAN card, income proof (salary slips, Form 16, or IT returns), and address proof. Being an existing SBI account holder or having an existing SBI Card relationship can help your approval chances, though neither is strictly required.

For support, you can reach SBI Card at 1860 180 1290 or 39 02 02 02 (prefix your city's STD code). Their chatbot ILA on sbicard.com handles basic queries, and the SBI Card mobile app is available for account management.

Verdict

Get this card if you're a frequent international traveler who values flexibility over airline loyalty. The 3% travel earn rate, 1.99% forex (among India's lowest), Priority Pass with 6 visits, and 25 transfer partners make this a strong all-round travel card.

Skip it if you're loyal to one airline (get a co-branded card instead), or your spend is under Rs. 12 lakhs where the milestone bonus and fee waiver remain out of reach.

Strengths: 1.99% forex, 25 transfer partners, 20,000 bonus credits at Rs. 12L, Rs. 1Cr air accident cover.

Weaknesses: Rs. 15L fee waiver threshold, same exclusion list as cheaper Miles cards, Priority Pass only free for 2 years.
