SAS EuroBonus Status Match: Elite Status for Indians, No Flights Needed
SAS is offering EuroBonus Silver, Gold, or Diamond status to Indians who already hold status with Air India, Emirates, Qatar, British Airways and a few others. No flight challenge, fees from EUR 39.
Here is a deal that is easy to miss. SAS, the Scandinavian airline, is handing out EuroBonus elite status to people in India who already hold status with another airline. No flights to take, no challenge to complete, and you keep the status well past your current membership year.
The cheapest tier costs EUR 39, which is less than a single airport lounge day pass at most Indian airports. And because SAS joined SkyTeam in 2024, that status now works across KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic, Delta and the rest of the alliance.
There is a catch or two, and it does not make sense for everyone. Let us walk through who this is actually good for and how to do it.
Why a Scandinavian airline is suddenly courting Indians
This offer did not appear out of nowhere. SAS just launched its first route to India in 17 years, a Copenhagen to Mumbai service meant to fly five times a week. They want Indian flyers signed up and loyal to EuroBonus before that route matures, and a cheap status match is the easiest way to get people in the door.
The launch itself has been rocky, to put it kindly. The inaugural flight on 2 June 2026 actually took off from Copenhagen, then turned back mid-air over Azerbaijan because the final Indian regulatory approval had not come through in time. The following flights on 4 and 5 June were cancelled too. SAS has called it an operational issue and says it is working with the authorities to sort it out.
So the route is paused for now. Hopefully they clear the paperwork and get those planes flying, because a direct Mumbai to Copenhagen link opens up Scandinavia and a lot of onward SkyTeam connections. Either way, the status match itself is live and working regardless of what happens with the flights.
The offer in one look

Why SAS status is worth anything to an Indian flyer
This is the part most write-ups skip, so let us be clear about it. SAS left Star Alliance and became a full SkyTeam member in September 2024. That single fact decides whether this offer is useful to you.
Your EuroBonus tier maps onto a SkyTeam alliance tier, and that is where the real perks live:
| EuroBonus tier | SkyTeam tier | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | SkyTeam Elite | Priority check-in, priority waitlist, preferred seating |
| Gold | SkyTeam Elite Plus | Lounge access with a guest, priority boarding and baggage, extra checked bag, fast track |
| Diamond | SkyTeam Elite Plus | Everything Gold gets, plus the highest priority and more EuroBonus perks |
The sweet spot is Gold. For EUR 79 you get SkyTeam Elite Plus, which means lounge access and a guest whenever you fly internationally on any SkyTeam airline, in any cabin. Out of India that mainly means KLM and Air France to Europe, Virgin Atlantic to London, and Vietnam Airlines to Southeast Asia. SAS itself is also adding a Copenhagen to Mumbai route, which brings the Nordics within direct reach.
Here is the honest flip side. SkyTeam status does nothing for you on Air India, IndiGo or Vistara. Air India is Star Alliance, and the others are not in an alliance at all. So if almost all your flying is domestic India or Air India long haul, this status will mostly sit unused. It pays off when you fly SkyTeam carriers even a couple of times a year.
What each tier actually gets you
Here is how the three tiers compare. The perks stack, so Gold includes everything Silver gets and Diamond includes everything Gold gets.
| Benefit | Silver | Gold | Diamond |
|---|---|---|---|
| SkyTeam alliance status | Elite | Elite Plus | Elite Plus |
| Lounge access (with a guest) | ✓ | ✓ | |
| Extra checked baggage | +1 bag | +2 bags | +2 bags |
| Priority check-in | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Priority boarding & baggage | ✓ | ✓ | |
| Free seat selection | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| Guaranteed economy seat | ✓ | ✓ | |
| Free onboard WiFi | ✓ | ✓ | |
| Fast track for friends or family | ✓ | ✓ | |
| Bonus points on SAS flights | +25% | +50% | +75% |
| Discount on SAS reward trips | 5% | 10% | 30% |
| Priority customer service | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ |
| No point expiration | ✓ | ||
| Free same-day rebooking | ✓ | ||
| No booking fees on reward trips | ✓ | ||
| Free drinks in economy | ✓ | ||
| Give away memberships | 2 |
The two that matter most for an Indian flyer are lounge access and the extra baggage at Gold, and the no point expiration at Diamond. That last one is quietly valuable if you are building a EuroBonus balance through Mag Miles and want it to sit there safely until you are ready to book.
Who can apply
You need two things: residency in India, and existing status with one of these airlines. Every programme follows the same pattern, so find your row and read across. Whichever column your current tier sits in is the EuroBonus status you can match into.
| Your loyalty programme | You get Silver | You get Silver or Gold | You get Gold or Diamond |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air India Maharaja Club | Silver | Gold | Platinum |
| British Airways Club | Bronze | Silver | Gold / Gold Guest List |
| Emirates Skywards | Silver | Gold | Platinum |
| Qatar Privilege Club | Silver | Gold | Platinum |
| Turkish Miles&Smiles | Classic Plus | Elite | Elite Plus |
| United MileagePlus | Premier Silver | Premier Gold | Platinum, 1K or Global Services |
| Lufthansa Miles & More* | Frequent Traveller | Senator | HON Circle |
*Miles & More also covers Austrian, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways and LOT.
If you hold status with an airline that is not on this list, you are out of luck. Only the listed programmes count.
The Air India shortcut most Indians can use
For a lot of readers here, the easiest way in is Air India Maharaja Club. Air India made tier progression noticeably easier in 2026, so plenty of people are sitting on Silver or Gold without realising it. If you have Maharaja Club status, that is your ticket into EuroBonus.
A Maharaja Club Gold holder, for example, can match straight into EuroBonus Gold, which is SkyTeam Elite Plus. You then have elite benefits on two different alliances at once: Star Alliance through Air India, and SkyTeam through SAS. Not a bad outcome for EUR 79.
Worth repeating though: the EuroBonus side of that only helps you on SkyTeam flights, not on Air India.
The fees
| EuroBonus tier | Fee | Roughly in rupees |
|---|---|---|
| Silver | EUR 39 | ~4,300 |
| Gold | EUR 79 | ~8,800 |
| Diamond | EUR 159 | ~17,600 |
The rupee figures are at roughly 111 to the euro and will move with the exchange rate, so treat them as a guide. The important bit is that the fee is only charged if you are approved. If the match is declined, the hold on your card is released and you pay nothing.
How to apply
The whole thing takes about a minute.
- Make sure you have a SAS EuroBonus membership number. If you do not, sign up for free first. It is just an email and a few details.
- Go to the status match page and enter your name, email, EuroBonus number and country of residence.
- Submit. You may be asked for proof of your existing status (a photo of your status card) and an ID check using your passport or driver's licence.
- Wait for the decision. SAS usually replies within three days. Once approved, the new tier can take up to 10 business days to appear in your account.
One detail people miss: matching in does not extend your existing tier with your current airline, and the EuroBonus year you get does not count towards SAS lifetime Gold or Diamond. You also do not get the member giveaway card. Everything else that comes with the tier is yours.
And if you matched into SAS before 2026, you are allowed to apply again under this offer.
Status is half the story. Points are the other half.
Elite status gets you the lounge and the extra bag. To actually book a SkyTeam award flight, you need EuroBonus points. And here is the quirk: no Indian credit card transfers to SAS EuroBonus, so for most people there is no normal way to earn these points from India.
That is exactly where Mag Miles come in. Mag Miles transfer to SAS EuroBonus at 1:1, which makes Magnify the only way to build a EuroBonus balance without flying SAS. You earn Mag Miles by buying gift cards for everyday spends on the Magnify app, no premium credit card needed. Pair the matched status with a Mag Miles balance and you have a complete EuroBonus setup: the tier for the perks, the points for the flights.
If you want to see what those points can actually do, this 19,000 mile KLM business class redemption to Colombia was booked entirely with SAS EuroBonus points. That is the kind of trip this whole ecosystem is built for.
So, is it worth it?
If you fly KLM, Air France, Virgin Atlantic or any SkyTeam carrier even occasionally, Gold at EUR 79 is an easy yes. A full extra year of lounge access and extra baggage will pay for itself on the first trip. Diamond makes sense if you want the top tier and the extra EuroBonus benefits like no point expiry.
If your flying is mostly domestic India or Air India, the status will not do much, and you can skip it without regret. Status is only valuable when you actually use the network it belongs to.
This is a limited time offer that SAS can pull at any point, so if you are on the fence and you do fly SkyTeam, it is worth locking in. You can apply for the status match here.
And once you are in the EuroBonus world, grab the Magnify app to start earning the points that make the status useful.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who can apply for the SAS EuroBonus status match?
You must be a resident of India and already hold elite status with Air India Maharaja Club, British Airways, Lufthansa Group (Miles & More, including Austrian, SWISS, Brussels, ITA and LOT), Emirates Skywards, Qatar Privilege Club, Turkish Miles&Smiles or United MileagePlus. You also need a SAS EuroBonus membership number, which is free to create.
How much does the SAS EuroBonus status match cost?
The application fee is EUR 39 for Silver, EUR 79 for Gold and EUR 159 for Diamond, which works out to roughly 4,300 to 17,600 rupees at around 111 to the euro. The fee is only charged if your application is approved.
Do I need to take any SAS flights to keep the status?
No. There is no flight challenge. Once approved, the status is valid for the rest of your current EuroBonus year plus the next full qualification year. After that, it only renews if you meet EuroBonus standard requalification requirements.
Does SAS EuroBonus status help me on Air India flights?
No. SAS left Star Alliance and joined SkyTeam in 2024, while Air India is a Star Alliance airline. Your Maharaja Club status is only used as the ticket to qualify for the match.
How long does the status match take to process?
You are usually told within three days whether the match is approved. After approval, it can take up to 10 business days for the new tier to show in your SAS EuroBonus account.
I already status matched into SAS before 2026. Can I apply again?
Yes. If you matched into SAS EuroBonus before 2026, you are eligible to apply again under this offer.
