Watching the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Points: A Dream Worth Planning For
PC - Marriott

I watched my first football match in a stadium back in 2019. Mallorca vs Real Madrid.

A small island team against one of the biggest clubs in the world. Mallorca won that game, and the atmosphere was unreal. Strangers hugging, the roar when the final whistle blew. That's when I understood why people spend crazy money to watch football live.

Now imagine doing that at a World Cup. With points.

Marriott Bonvoy just announced they're the Official Hotel Supporter of FIFA World Cup 2026. The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19 across the US, Canada, and Mexico. 48 teams, 104 matches, 16 cities.

For those of us who collect hotel points, this is worth paying attention to.

What Marriott is offering

The full details aren't out yet. But here's what's confirmed:

Hotel stays: Marriott has properties in all 16 host cities. Everything from Fairfield Inns (35,000 to 50,000 points per night) to The Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis.

Marriott Bonvoy Moments: This is their experiential rewards platform. They've confirmed World Cup-specific experiences will be available for points. Match access, fan activations, exclusive packages. Details coming soon.

If you've used Moments before, you know they do sports well. Their Manchester United partnership offers stadium sleepovers and travelling with the team. For Atletico Madrid in La Liga, packages with prime seats and a hotel night have gone for 100,000 to 150,000 points.

So watching World Cup matches on points is a real possibility.

Earning Marriott points from India

Amex Membership Rewards transfers to Marriott Bonvoy. If you're holding an Amex Platinum or Gold, that's your path.

A mid-range hotel during the tournament could cost 50,000 to 75,000 points per night. For a 4-night trip, you're looking at 200,000 to 300,000 points just for accommodation. With only 5 months to go, you're unlikely to accumulate that from scratch. But if you already have a points balance sitting somewhere, now's the time to think about where to deploy it.

Why status matters at big events

Elite status becomes more valuable during high-demand periods.

Marriott Platinum and above get late checkout, room upgrades when available, and lounge access at certain properties. During a World Cup, when hotels are packed and everyone's checking out at the same time, these perks actually matter.

And if you're flying to the US for this, Marriott Platinum can be converted to Star Alliance Gold through Singapore Airlines. That gets you Air India lounge access, extra baggage, and priority boarding.

The dream

I've only watched one football match in a stadium. That Mallorca game. Small stadium, local crowd, David vs Goliath.

Mallorca vs Madrid

A World Cup is something else entirely. The scale, the atmosphere, fans from every country.

The difference between "someday I'll go" and "I'm actually going" often comes down to whether you act on it. For points collectors, Marriott's FIFA partnership gives us a path.
