Mag Miles now transfer to Ethiopian Airlines ShebaMiles at a flat 1:1 ratio. This is our third airline transfer partner (after Vietnam Airlines LotusSmiles and Air India Maharaja Club), and it's live in the app right now.

Ethiopian Airlines might not be the first name you think of when it comes to airline miles. But they're part of Star Alliance, they fly from five Indian cities, and they connect to 84 destinations across Africa. That last part is what makes this interesting.

Why Star Alliance matters more than the airline name

Ethiopian Airlines is a full Star Alliance member. When you have ShebaMiles, you're not limited to Ethiopian flights. You can book on any of the 25 Star Alliance carriers:

  • Aegean Airlines (Greece)
  • Air Canada (Canada)
  • Air China (China)
  • Air India (India)
  • Air New Zealand (New Zealand)
  • ANA (Japan)
  • Asiana Airlines (South Korea)
  • Austrian Airlines (Austria)
  • Avianca (Colombia)
  • Brussels Airlines (Belgium)
  • Copa Airlines (Panama)
  • Croatia Airlines (Croatia)
  • EgyptAir (Egypt)
  • Ethiopian Airlines (Ethiopia)
  • EVA Air (Taiwan)
  • LOT Polish Airlines (Poland)
  • Lufthansa (Germany)
  • Shenzhen Airlines (China)
  • Singapore Airlines (Singapore)
  • South African Airways (South Africa)
  • Swiss International Air Lines (Switzerland)
  • TAP Air Portugal (Portugal)
  • Thai Airways (Thailand)
  • Turkish Airlines (Turkey)
  • United Airlines (United States)

That's flights to Frankfurt, Singapore, New York, Tokyo, Istanbul, and basically every continent covered. And ShebaMiles lets you book Star Alliance partner awards directly online through their website and app.

Ethiopian Airlines from India

Ethiopian operates direct flights from five Indian cities, all connecting through their hub in Addis Ababa:

  • Delhi (near daily, 10 flights a week)
  • Mumbai (double daily, 14 flights a week)
  • Bengaluru (3 flights a week)
  • Chennai (4 flights a week)
  • Hyderabad (3 flights a week)

Delhi and Mumbai are the highest-frequency routes. Bengaluru, Chennai, and Hyderabad give you a direct connection without backtracking through a Gulf hub.

Africa is the real unlock

This is where Ethiopian stands apart. They fly to 84 destinations across the African continent, more than any other airline. Once you're at the Addis Ababa hub, the entire continent opens up.

East Africa: Nairobi, Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro, Mombasa, Zanzibar, Entebbe, Kigali. Southern Africa: Johannesburg, Cape Town, Victoria Falls, Lusaka, Harare. West Africa: Lagos, Accra, Dakar, Abidjan, Douala. And that's just a fraction of the 84 cities.

If you've been looking at an African safari, a South African trip, or even just visiting friends and family across the continent, this is the most connected network you'll find from India. Most other routing options involve two stops. Ethiopian does it with one, through Addis Ababa.

They also fly from Addis Ababa to 19 European cities (London, Paris, Frankfurt, Rome, Madrid, and more), South America (Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires), and North America (Washington DC, Newark, Houston, Chicago, Toronto). But Africa is where the network is genuinely unmatched.

The credit card double dip

If you already have a credit card that earns rewards, Mag Miles stack on top. Buy an Amazon gift card on Magnify with your Infinia or Atlas, and you've earned Mag Miles from Magnify plus reward points from your card. Same purchase, both earn.

There's also a direct angle here: Axis Bank's eDGE Rewards program transfers to Ethiopian ShebaMiles (Ethiopian is in Axis Group A). So if you have an Axis card, you can earn Mag Miles on the Magnify app and also transfer your Axis points separately. Two paths to the same miles.

If you don't have a premium card, Mag Miles work just fine with UPI. That's the point.
