HSBC Visa Platinum Credit Card Review: 20 Transfer Partners, Zero Annual Fee
The HSBC Visa Platinum is a lifetime free card with 20 transfer partners across 15 airlines and 5 hotels. Same partners as the TravelOne, but with a lower earning rate and no lounge access. Here's the full breakdown.
The HSBC Visa Platinum is a lifetime free credit card that transfers to 20 loyalty programs across 15 airlines and 5 hotel chains. That's the same transfer partner lineup as the HSBC TravelOne, which charges INR 1,500 per year.
For a card with no joining fee and no annual fee, that's a genuinely unusual feature. Most free cards in India give you cashback or a basic rewards catalogue. This one lets you convert points to KrisFlyer miles, Avios, Flying Blue, Marriott Bonvoy, and 16 other programs.
The catch? The earning rate is lower (2 points per INR 150 vs 4 on the TravelOne), and there's no airport lounge access at all. But if you're someone who wants to start collecting transferable points without committing to an annual fee, this is one of the very few options available.
Fees & Welcome Benefits
| Details | |
|---|---|
| Joining Fee | Free |
| Annual Fee | Free (lifetime) |
| Add-on Card | Free (up to 3) |
| Welcome Benefit | 2,000 reward points (spend INR 5,000 in 30 days + download HSBC app) |
| Swiggy One | 3-month membership on card activation |
| Network | Visa Signature |
The card is genuinely lifetime free. No spend thresholds to worry about, no conditions to meet. You just don't pay anything.
The welcome benefit gives you 2,000 reward points when you spend INR 5,000 within the first 30 days and log into the HSBC India app. Points are credited within 60 days. You also get a complimentary 3-month Swiggy One membership on activation.
There's no renewal benefit since there's no renewal fee.
Earning Structure
| Category | Rate |
|---|---|
| Travel with Points portal | Up to 6X reward points |
| All Other Eligible Spends | 2 points per INR 150 |
You earn 2 reward points for every INR 150 spent. That's a base rate of roughly 1.33 points per INR 100. For comparison, the HSBC TravelOne earns 4 points per INR 150 (2.67 points per INR 100), exactly double.
Points are valid for 3 years from the date of earning. Once they expire, they cannot be reinstated, so make sure you're converting them regularly.
Bookings through HSBC's Travel with Points portal earn up to 6X reward points on hotels, flights, and car rentals.
Fuel transactions and EMI (IEMI) transactions don't earn points.
Transfer Partners
This is the card's standout feature. You get access to the same 20 transfer partners as the TravelOne and Premier, all convertible instantly via the HSBC India Mobile Banking app.

The Math: Free Card vs TravelOne
Since this card shares transfer partners with the TravelOne, the real question is whether the free card earns enough to justify skipping the paid one.
The Visa Platinum earns 2 points per INR 150. The TravelOne earns 4 points per INR 150. Both transfer at the same ratios.
So for every INR 150 you spend, the Platinum gives you 1 airline mile (at 2:1), while the TravelOne gives you 2 miles. The TravelOne costs INR 1,500 per year (waivable at INR 1.5L spend). If you spend less than INR 1.5L per year on the card, the Platinum might actually be the better deal since you're not paying anything for the privilege of having transfer partners.
Fuel Benefits
| Details | |
|---|---|
| Surcharge Waiver | 1% waiver on INR 400-4,000 transactions (capped INR 250/month) |
| Contactless Cashback | INR 250/quarter on INR 10,000+ contactless fuel spends |
The card offers a standard 1% fuel surcharge waiver, plus a separate contactless fuel cashback of INR 250 per quarter if your cumulative contactless fuel spends exceed INR 10,000 in a calendar quarter. Individual transactions must be between INR 1,000 and INR 5,000. That's up to INR 1,000 per year in fuel cashback, which is solid for a free card.
Fuel transactions don't earn reward points.
Lounge Access
None. The HSBC Visa Platinum does not come with any airport lounge access, domestic or international. If lounge access matters to you, the HSBC Live+ gives you 4 domestic visits per year, or the TravelOne offers more.
International Spending
The card has a 3.5% foreign currency markup on all international transactions. Cards issued after December 2013 are set to domestic-only by default, so you'll need to enable international usage via PhoneBanking or an HSBC branch before using the card abroad.
You earn the base 2 points per INR 150 on international spends.

Verdict
The HSBC Visa Platinum is the only lifetime free card in India with 20 transfer partners across airlines and hotels. That alone makes it worth considering, especially if you're not ready to commit to an annual fee card but want the flexibility of transferable points.
The earning rate is modest at 2 points per INR 150, and there's no lounge access. But you're paying nothing for the card, and you get the same transfer partner lineup as the TravelOne. The fuel cashback (up to INR 1,000/year) and Times Prime subscription add incremental value.
Get this card if you want transferable points to airline miles and hotel programs without paying an annual fee. Skip it if you need lounge access or want a higher earning rate (look at the TravelOne instead).
